UniFi Network 11 can see your smart home now. That's more useful than it sounds.

Ubiquiti announced UniFi Network 11 on October 12 [1], and for the first time a UniFi release reads like it was written for people with smart bulbs as much as people with server racks.

What's new

  • A re-engineered telemetry engine with "over 30% better scalability," live traffic flows for every device behind a UniFi gateway, and Time Machine Topology to see how your network changed over time [1].
  • Gateway upgrades: more VLAN capacity, simpler Routing Policies using Network Lists (now with external URL support), and WiFi WAN, which turns any available Wi-Fi network, even your phone's hotspot, into a primary or backup internet connection on supported models [1].
  • Smarter security: with Cybersecure Enhanced, daily threat signatures from Proofpoint now come with AI-assisted explanations and recommendations [1].
  • SD-WAN policies for custom failover and application-based routing across sites [1].
  • Matter awareness: enter a Matter pairing code to bring devices into UniFi and see battery, firmware and signal strength, plus a unified IP and Thread topology with custom alerts [1].
  • Custom device icons, including ones you shoot with your phone's camera [1]. Silly. I love it.

Why Matter visibility is a big deal

Smart home troubleshooting today goes like this: the door sensor stops reporting, you open three apps, and you eventually replace a battery you didn't know was low. UniFi seeing Matter and Thread devices alongside everything else [1] means one place to check battery, signal and how a device connects. It works alongside your existing Matter controller rather than replacing it [1], which is the right call.

WiFi WAN is the homelab hero

Internet goes down, you turn on your phone's hotspot, and the whole house fails over to it [1]. Not elegant, extremely practical. For a home office, that's the difference between a missed meeting and a mild inconvenience. Watch your data plan, though; a family of streamers can chew through a hotspot cap fast.

The AI threat explanations

Intrusion alerts are notoriously cryptic. Plain-language explanations and recommendations [1] could help small offices act on them instead of ignoring them. My usual caveat applies: an explanation is a starting point, not a verdict. If the AI says something is fine and your gut disagrees, check.

What I'd try first

  1. Matter devices. Pair your most important sensors (doors, water leak) and set alerts.
  2. WiFi WAN backup. Test it on purpose by unplugging the modem, so you know it works before you need it.
  3. Time Machine Topology. Look at last week. You'll learn something about your own network.

What I'd wait on

SD-WAN policy changes across multiple sites deserve a maintenance window and a rollback plan. Same goes for big VLAN restructures. New capacity is tempting; redesigning on day one of a major release is how weekends disappear.

Should you upgrade?

Major version, so let it settle for a week or two unless a feature solves a real problem for you today. Then back up, upgrade, and start with the Matter integration.

Bottom line

Network 11 makes UniFi the place where your whole home network, smart devices included, is finally visible. Upgrade after a short wait, test the hotspot backup, and give your mystery devices custom icons. Even the smart plug deserves a face.
