The story so far
I've been in the technology sector for 20 years. I came up hands-on in support, network and server administration and security, fixing and building things, and grew into leading the people and processes that keep large technology operations running. Most of my career has lived at the intersection of systems, security and the people who use them, which is a fancy way of saying I've seen a lot of things blink red at inconvenient times.
These days that covers systems administration, cybersecurity, user support and training, asset management and logistics, and web and light application development. I'm a technology guy at heart, at work and at home.
- Hands-on technologySupport, network and server administration, and security. Learning the fundamentals the honest way: by breaking things and fixing them. Multiple IT certifications along the way.
- Operations leadershipKeeping systems, equipment and the teams behind them moving.
- Asset management and logisticsEquipment, data and people in the right place at the right time.
- Supporting a small managed solutions firmHelping deliver security and support that small organizations can actually live with.
- Web and light application developmentWebsites, dashboards and small tools that make everyday work easier.
- Now: evangelist and leaderHelping people adopt AI, security and everyday technology without the hype.
How I work
Make the safe path the easy path. If people have to work around a control, it isn't a control. It's a suggestion with paperwork.
Decide with enough data, not all of it. Certainty never arrives. Write down why, move, revisit if the facts change.
Automate the boring parts. If a human does it the same way every week, a script should do it and the human should check the script.
Explain it kindly. Nobody learns anything while feeling dumb.
Outlook
Optimistic, with a seatbelt. Technology makes almost everything better, and also gives us new ways to break things at scale. I'd rather help shape it than complain about it.
Speaking and consulting
I'm open to speaking and consultations. Talks, panels, workshops or a focused working session on practical AI, security programs people will actually follow, getting more out of everyday technology, or running operations at scale. Plain language, real examples, no slide with 400 words on it. Email me with the audience, the topic and the timing.
