Nvidia wants to be inside your next Windows laptop. Should you wait for one?

Every September, Berlin's IFA show reminds us that laptops still matter. This year's twist: some of the most interesting Windows laptops aren't running Intel or AMD at all.

What showed up

Lenovo announced two premium laptops powered by Nvidia RTX Spark: the Yoga Pro 9n (15-inch) and a new Yoga 9n 2-in-1 (16-inch) [1][2]. Mashable reports the Yoga Pro 9n spec sheet includes up to 128GB of RAM, up to 4TB of storage, and a 2.5K OLED display at up to 165Hz [2]. Pricing and release dates? Not yet [2].

Nvidia has described RTX Spark as a "superchip" for "personal AI computers," with up to 1 petaflop of compute and up to 128GB of memory, built for slim Windows laptops [2].

Gamers, this part is for you

A new chip platform lives or dies on whether your games run. At Gamescom a week earlier, Nvidia said EA, Embark and Ubisoft are bringing titles to RTX Spark ahead of its fall launch, joining KRAFTON, NetEase, Riot Games and Xbox [3]. It's also working with EA on native anti-cheat support [3], which matters more than any benchmark: online games that won't launch because of anti-cheat are the classic way new PC platforms disappoint people.

Why 128GB matters (and when it doesn't)

Big unified memory is what lets a laptop run large AI models locally, edit huge video projects, or keep 47 Chrome tabs open without a cry for help. If you do AI development, 3D work or serious video, it's a real reason to look.

If you write documents, attend video calls and watch Netflix, it's overkill. A good mainstream laptop will serve you for years.

Should you wait?

  • You're a creator or developer who needs a new machine in the next few months: worth waiting to see prices and reviews. First-generation platforms are exciting and occasionally rough.
  • You need a laptop now for normal work: buy what's good today. There is always something better coming. That's the whole industry.
  • You're a gamer: wait for real-world testing of your specific games, including anti-cheat. "Supported" and "runs great" are cousins, not twins.

What everyone is missing

The interesting fight in laptops is no longer just Intel versus AMD. It's x86 versus Arm on Windows, with Nvidia, Qualcomm and Apple all pushing the same message: local AI, long battery life, big memory. Competition like that is how laptops get better and, eventually, cheaper.

Bottom line

RTX Spark laptops look like serious machines for serious work. No prices yet, so no verdict yet. If your current laptop is fine, let the early adopters find the rough edges first.
